"Mum?" Peter walked into the staff room, but the room was empty. Nannette had been called away and it was getting to lunch time and he was hungry. He walked down the corridor, his robot in his hand, peering into each open doorway. He knew he shouldn't be out, but his empty belly and his need for his mother was too strong to stay sat colouring. She had been so distracted this morning, she hadn't wanted to play or anything. She never wanted to play anymore really, but she did it anyway. He missed her. The only time things ever seemed like they used to be was at bedtime, when they read the stories together before she tucked him in. They read stories of pirates and crocodiles, of fairies and adventure, and he loved listening to his mum, making the tales all come alive with her funny voices and her little butterfly kisses and tickles. He needed a hug right now, he wanted to find her.

Rounding the corner, he peered into one of the smaller day lounges. Empty. He went to leave, but a deep voice stopped him.

"What you looking for, kid?"

Peter peeked around the corner again, and saw a man in a wheelchair, huddled in the corner. He had a book in his hand, but that wasn't the hand that caught his attention. Where the other one should be, there was a silver pincer, like a crab leg. Peter looked at it momentarily and looked away. He knew enough about the people that mum helped to know that it wasn't polite to look, or to ask questions about their differences.

"I'm looking for my mum." He stepped into the doorway a little, his robot clanging against the wall as he brushed past it. "Have you seen her?"

The man looked at him for a moment, his brow furrowed, and put the book down on his lap.

"I think I know who you mean, Wendy, right? Wears a nametag, kinda annoying?"

Peter nodded hard. "She's not annoying, but she is called Wendy."

The man snorted. "That's your opinion, but yeah, I've seen your mum. She's coming back in a minute, to take me to therapy. She threatened earlier. Who's this?"

He pointed to the robot with his pincer. Peter raised him high, showing him off, a little smile on his face.

"Robbie, my robot. My dad bought him for me."

The Captain nodded. "Your dad work here too?"

Peter shook his head, looking at the floor, pulling his robot closer to his chest.

"No, he lives in heaven now. He bought me Robbie before he went away. Mum said he wanted to come home, but God needed him instead."

"Was your daddy a soldier?" he asked softly, and Peter watched his face scrunch up as he answered yes.

The man rested his head in his hand and made a funny noise. Peter inched forward, Robbie protecting him as he shuffled forward, footstep by footstep.

"Don't be sad," he said. "My mum will help you, she helps lots of people here."

The Captain looked up at him, and half smiled.
